Executive Shadowing and Executive Coaching
More and
more, Bill Wheless is spending his time working one-on-one
with clients who have problems with their interpersonal skills.
In some instances, those problems are so serious that they
have resulted over time in dysfunctional behavior that is
affecting the client's career and/or job performance. Bill
is an executive coaching specialist who identifies those behaviors, helps the
client realize the full impact and consequences of the behaviors
and helps the client eliminate them.
The process,
called ''Executive Shadowing'', can take a few days or as
much as a week or more, depending on the issues being addressed.
In some instances, Bill is hired by the client him/herself.
In other instances, it is the client's boss who calls Bill
in. When working with CEO's, Bill often has been retained
by the Chairman of the Board. In every instance, however,
it is with the complete acceptance and cooperation of the
client.
Some of
the issues with senior executives have been described by their
bosses in various ways.
''He
seems to lack conviction. I'm sure he feels strongly about
important issues, but you would never know it from the way
he comes across.''
''She isn't decisive. She will allow something to be talked
to death. Her people want her to make a decision and move
on.''
''He doesn't act like a CEO. He used to be VP of Production/Operations,
and I think that's how he still sees himself.''
''He wears me out. He doesn't know how to get to the point.
And I'm sure, if he's doing it with me (the boss), he's
doing it with his direct reports, customers -- everybody.
We've got to fix it.''
''I've got to have somebody strong running that division;
somebody who can take all of those people down there and
make a high performance unit out of them.''
Regardless
of the words that are used to describe the problem, they are
all leadership issues that affect careers and company performance.
The very
intimate, sometimes threatening nature of executive coaching
requires a special mix of coaching skills if the sessions
are to be productive and result in a positive change in behavior.
Bill Wheless' success in executive coaching at all levels
is based on five factors:
- Twenty
years experience as a company executive, including Chief
Operating Officer of a major television network affiliate.
He has experienced personally many of the changes his clients
are going through.
-
An ability to quickly establish trust and confidence with
the client leading to a high level of comfort and potential
for change.
-
An instinct for knowing how to reduce a client's resistance
to personal change by helping the client see the value of
other communication and behavior options.
-
An uncompromising commitment to the principles and ethics
of executive coaching.
-
A strong, personal motivation to help clients reach their
potential and agreed-upon goals.
